Hurricane Ike Photo Gallery by Dallas Photographer Gail Nogle

Hurricane Ike barrelled into the densely populated Texas coast near Houston early on Saturday, bringing with it a wall of water and ferocious winds and rain that flooded large areas along the Gulf of Mexico and paralyzed Houston, the fourth-largest U.S. city.

Galveston took the brunt of the storm as it emerged from the Gulf of Mexico on September 13, 2008. When it was safe to enter the city, Gail grabbed her camera and headed south to chronicle in photos, one of the most extreme weather events ever to hit the Texas coast.

Dallas Portrait Photographer Gail Nogle Shares Galveston Texas Hurricane Photographs

Hurricane Ike was the third most destructive hurricane to ever make landfall in the United States. By the early morning hours of September 5, Ike was a Category 4 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 145 mph. That made it the most intense storm so far in the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season. At one point the diameter of Ike's tropical storm and hurricane force winds were 600 and 240 miles, respectively, making Ike the most massive Atlantic hurricane recorded.
